Great book, but I've had it for less than a week and noticed an error. The photos and labels for the purple-spores puffball (a choice edible) and the poison pigskin puffball were switched. An important error that should be corrected in future editions. Found this out by cross referencing it with MO Department of Conservation's field guide. So use this as a great resource, but ALWAYS get lots of info from different sources before thinking your identification is 100% correct.
This book is difficult to use and you have to flip back and forth between the photos and the descriptions. I also do not like how in the introduction it repeatedly encourages you to nibble on a small bit of a mushroom to help you identify it. This is dangerous advice. Another complaint is that the mushrooms are in here with names that a combo of scientific names and common names--many of the common names are unfamiliar to me and the people in my mushroom club as if these names were just made up by the author.Also, I should add that despite the latest copyright December 2016, this book incorrectly calls mushrooms plants and claims they are part of the plant kingdom! They are in the Eumycota kingdom.
Ordered this without realizing how many pages I'd have to leaf through and how many descriptions to read closely before realizing that said mushroom only grows outside of my state.In other words, this is useful if you mushroom all over the country, otherwise you're much better off buying a regional guide
This field guide really should be easier to use. The" look-alikes" listed in the field descriptions for a particular mushroom are only listed by Latin name without a common name or photo number to refer to. Instead, you'll need to look up the Latin name for the look-alike in the index and find what page(s) it is listed on just to find the common name for it so you can find what page the photo is on. For example: The Chanterelle (#308) has four look-alikes listed in it's description. The first one listed is Omphalotus olearius. So you'll need to look up that name in the index and find that it has a photo(#310) and look that up only to find that it's a Jack-O-Lantern mushroom and is listed right next to the Chanterelle. This guide would be so much easier to use if the publisher would just include the common name and photo plate number in the "look-alikes" section of the field description. Cross-referencing look-alikes is a very important part of successful mushroom hunting and I'm very surprised this Audubon Society publication has made it so difficult
This was the first mushroom guidebook I purchased, and while it's thorough, it's not comprehensive. I'm always amazed at the mushrooms I don't (or can't) find in this guide, even though its approach lets you drill down using shape, color, and spore print. And while the photos are very good, there are so many mushroom look-alikes that relying on photos can be dicey. A good companion book for me is Mushrooms of the Northeast (see separate review). As a low-intermediate collector I find it a good complement to the Audubon guide. Beginners will find Good Mushroom Bad Mushroom invaluable. CAVEAT: Those who are not advanced mushroom hunters should never, ever rely solely on books, online guides, or Facebook "groups" to determine if a mushroom is safe. Take a course. Or find a hands-on mushroom hunting club and join it. ERs have seen a spike in the number of cases of people coming in having consumed toxic mushrooms. Those who survive (many don't) often wish they were dead. That's no joke.
Firstly, this is a really beautiful book. It's bound in some kind of feaux leather, has a mass of beautiful color photographs of the mushrooms, and is a convenient size to take with you on your expeditions. However, I think that the organization of this book is cumbersome and confusing. To identify a mushroom, the book expects you to identify its shape, then using that shape to find a picture of your mushroom in the color plates, and then you find the corresponding mushroom description linked to the color plate. This would be a great system for identifying birds or plants, but mushrooms all more or less have the same shape. So to organize the mushrooms by shape to me seems to be an inferior way of organizing them than actually organizing them by genus and species. Furthermore, because the mushrooms aren't organized by genus and species, if you find a mushroom that you are pretty sure is an amanita (for example), you can't just flip to the amanita section and find your mushroom, because there is no amanita section. Instead you would have to take a stab at the shape of the mushroom and find your mushroom that way. Also, this book is not comprehensive, but honestly there is no way it could be and still be pocket sized. This book does have some great things going for it, but I don't think that it's the guide for me.
I got this book for my dad, who has long been into canning and pickling. As he often comes across different vegetables and mushrooms in the wild, he was curious to learn more about them. He was happy to get this book, which is very detailed, including information about seasonal mushrooms, edibility, identifying marks, among other things. And perhaps the best feature, theres a TON of color photographs to help with identifying different varieties. My dad has found a lot of help from this book, so it was a well-made purchase.
Absolutely awesome. We have recently started hiking and running across all sorts of mushrooms in the wild. We were curious as to what we were seeing. We bring this book with us now and are able to identify our discoveries with ease. The color photos enable exact identification, and the corresponding information pages educate us on all the properties of each new find. This book has inspired us to buy more from National Audubon Society. Great buy!!!
