This is a well-written, scholarly, and comprehensive book for people in the various states and geographic areas who wish to grow table grapes. I wish this had been made clear upfront or in the title as I live in Sonoma, in the California wine country and have a small vineyard. The information and advice does cross over to some extent, but this is not the guide to growing wine grapes I was looking to purchase. This a five star book for those interested in table grapes. I rated it three stars for lack of candor and applicability to wine grapes.
Although this book has become older (what hasn't), it will remain valuable for quite a while for those of us into grape growing. We live in Oregon and found his advice so helpful that we made a trip to visit him a few years ago. Now that Mr Rombough has passed away (winter of 2012), his family is responding to inquiries.Read the book and keep it handy; it is a great reference for varieties, propagation, habits, pruning essentials and much more. We have found no other book that covers the same ground.There is information about wine grapes but the book focuses more on the growing of vines and the wonders of table grapes. Don't expect much about processing grapes but if you are into the plants, this book is definitely worth the read.
This book is steeped in knowledge around the grape. If you ever wanted to know about it, and it related to grapes, it is probably in the book or referenced somewhere in the text. The author knows hi stuff and he writes in a fashion that doesn't bore and isn't dry.
I would like a clearer section of troubleshooting, but other than that, this is top notch how-to guide. The instructions on trimming and cloning vines alone will save you ten times the cost of the book (and it might save you a whole growing season too).

Good book for my class
This is from a man who immersed himself in the history, growing, and uses of grapes. When you read this it is like having your grand-pa spoon-feed you the wisdom of the ages. Especially good for discussions of non-vinifera grapes and their hybrids, which for most of us who live east of the Rocky Mountains, are the grapes we can actually grow ourselves.
After growing grapes casually (ornamentally, really) for the past five years, we somehow in a drought year came up with an outstanding crop of the most delicious grapes. Seeing some potential for our 40 acres, I recently invested in a small library on grape growing and winemaking, and find this book to be first-class. It is very straightforward and gives a great introduction to the growing of grapes in general, with enticing tangents about grape propagation and breeding. I did not find the book burdened by the "organic" in the title. He offers a wide variety of solutions to grape growing problems, and while his philosophy favors organic methods, I didn't find the book awkwardly tied to only those solutions. I thought it was very balanced.
