I've been keeping horses for 35 years in a variety of circumstances - boarding, large open ranch with hundreds of acres, smaller farm set up, and on an urban lot. We just purchased a place with 7 acres in town that requires the horse facilities be built from scratch.This book has definitely helped me figure out the best layout for multiple, rotational paddocks. Mostly though, it has been useful in figuring out how to best protect the existing spring fed creek from unintended waste runoff. I would suggest all horse owners read this and especially the first timers. It's easier & less expensive to set up your place correctly at the start rather than fix big problems later.
This book by Cherry Hill is an excellent guide which will help you consider all aspects of horse property. It includes location, stable building, stalls and stall ground material, fencing and more.Cherry Hill, a horse trainer herself, writes very clearly on a subject she knows very well.
This is a great book. It is not for the faint of heart and is very detailed and informative for people who are serious about land and horse ownership. It gives you a lot more information than you might think is necessary for your goals but should be taken seriously and gives you pictured examples of the well maintained vs. the unprepared for. It is not a quick read, It is an interesting take notes kind of book.......... sticky notes........ on several pages.
Even tho I gave it an excellent book I must qualify that with the fact that I no experience whatsoever with keeping any animal other than a cat or a dog on a subdivision lot. However, the book is very well organized and very specific. It explains in detail what it means to own an animal like a horse and even explains how to keep financial records which is not something I had even contemplated. Also there are legal ramifications that I had no knowledge of at the onset of my study until reading this book. This is not all, the book not only explains what type of site for keeping your horse is going to work for you personally and ideally for your horse. I thoroughly enjoyed all the color photos of housing, land, horses and examples of working farms already established and example blueprints for your own to design and build. The book gave examples of equipment necessary for keeping, caring for and transporting your horse. Much detail was put into the land management for your property where the horse will be grazing and running and living. Soil samples, hay types and even noxious weeds are discussed. Water quality and had a whole chapter devoted to it! Excellent book!
This book is really helpful in setting up a small horse facility. We are starting from scratch, and it gives us a lot of ideas. My favorite part is the sample layouts, although I think those could use more description about why they were set up that way and alternatives.
I find this book has given me several ideas and helped me avoid a lot of problems designing my new ranch (42 deeded acres with more in lease) . Great for horse ranchers with 1/4 of an acre all the way to 40 acres because the principals are based on experience. There are several pictures of the author's ranch to illustrate what she is talking about. Every aspect of horse ownership is touched upon (I've had horses for over 12 years) and it's a great book to help you improve your ranch layout for efficiency and the health of your animals. Highly recommended!!!
Completely covers the gamit of owning a horse. Price your own area for feed, hay etc, but calculation estimates were handy. Book covers all aspects of horse owning with realistic expectations of owners. Invaluable to have even if you are considering owning a horse. Heavy gloss paper. Color photo's galore. Well explained and easy to read. Highly recommend.
This book was probably one of the most useful "horsey" that I own. I bought it for my college "Equine Management" course and I absolutely adored it. I looked forward to reading it and it provided wonderful and useful information for my growing education. Cherry Hill has always been one of my favorites and she's done it again! A great read and something to hold on to.
