I work in a consulting role and was looking for a book to help improve my client interviews. There are several books out there that give you ideas about questions to ask but this book gives you a roadmap for developing good questions. It adds the element of strategy.If you like this book, you should also take a look at John Sawatsky (you'll have to google him, he hasn't written any books). He's done a lot of research on interviewing and the best ways to formulate questions. His work nicely compliments this book.
Whether you are in sales or not, you must buy this book. I can see how some would be disappointed, because I also thought it would be more of a book on how to detect lies and read people, and it's not. Even thought the title is misleading, it offers information that you MUST have if you intend on reading any other body language or lie detecting type book. It's a necessarily complimentary book. The things you learn will help you in all aspects of life.
I was disappointed with this book because I was hoping for something that would teach me to magically pull information from someone, subliminally. Maybe I was being unrealistic, but that's what the title implied.The book doesn't teach you how to find out ANYTHING, from ANYONE, ANYTIME. It teaches you how to ask questions and try to find ways to keep on asking more questions that will lead to knowing anything (if they're WILLING to tell you!!!!!!)After it goes deep into the art of asking questions, the book takes a turn by emphasizing the importance of LISTENING. I actually liked the example that they used. They were taking about a girl who studied Spanish, and she asked her boyfriend (or husband? I forget) for feedback as to how well she was doing. The way the conversation went was that she approached someone and asked for the time. So, after she had done that, she told her boyfriend/husband and asked how well she did. He replied that he doesn't know. He asked, what time did they say it was? She couldn't answer because she was not paying attention. So, even though she knew how to ASK the time, she wasn't willing to LISTEN to the answer. So, by using that example, the author explains that we quite often can ask questions, yet we don't pay attention when the answer is given to us.After all, when people talk to us, they don't always say things explicitly. When a girl says, "I have a boyfriend," she may just be trying to politely tell you that she's not interested. The idea of listening is to pay attention to clues in what's being told to you in order to put together the pieces to the puzzle.So, the book starts off discussing many techniques of asking good questions. It takes a turn to focus on being a good listener. And it ends by focusing on ways to improve your communication skills in various areas of your life. Good read!
This book is extremely useful for anyone in any field. The act of asking questions is so integral in order to perform to the highest level possible. A lot of people stress the importance of listening--as does this book. However, in order to better guarantee that what you are listening to is useful information, you need to make sure you ask the right questions first.This book talks about asking questions and listening to the answers. It touches upon--and recommends books for--the various sub-specialities you will encounter in the interrogation world. With the way this book is written, it proves useful for anyone in any field. For interrogation it really serves as a primer that introduces you to the basics. It also talks about how these basics (asking good questions, listening, note-taking, etc) are the bread and butter in the interrogation world. They work so well it can be used in several facets of life--personal, professional, Law enforcement, etc.Fortunately, I bought this book in order to make my questioning methods more effective at work and beyond. So I was not mislead by the title, but I can see how some may feel mislead. This book really is about the meat and potatoes of interrogation. It broadly defines most of what you would use every day in the interrogation world, and it applies these broad definitions to other subjects most people can apply it to.What this book does NOT go into are the finer points of interrogation in different scenarios that are more advanced. For example, this book assumes the subject is neutral or positive about answering questions. It does not really teach you how to make people more cooperative--although it does prime you for that and gives you sources to pursue further. Additionally, while it touches upon deception detection and body language, it is not meant to teach you the in-depth methods of either.Dimensions can be seen in the photos I have uploaded.Pros:*Very useful content for any person*Very good examples that are easy to relate to*Immediately applicable in personal and professional lifeCons:*Title is a bit misleading for someone who does not dig a little deeper to see what the book is about (-1/4 of a star)Additional Considerations:How to Spot a Liar is a book that is mentioned a lot in this book. With how much it is mentioned I feel as though it would be useful to read the two books in tandem. I plan on reading the book next so I can understand the content in this book even better.I really hope Pyle writes more books. Especially ones that go deeper into more advanced interrogation. While the book was well written, I felt like the author was forced to put together a cliff notes version and sell it as the end all be all. You can definitely tell he has a lot more information and a lot of depth he wants to share but is unable to in a 280 page book. If you have any experience in interrogations and or investigations this won’t really advance your foundation as I had hoped. The author needs to be “unleashed†and allowed to write a book similar in length to War and Peace.
While not exactly what I was hoping to read in a book with this title, I think many people may find it useful. Unless you are an attorney conducting cross-examination, all relevant questions should be "Who, What, When, Where, Why, How" followed by listening (hearing is useless without listening). This is a good basic beginners text on how to start effectively asking questions.
This book gives great insight into interrogation processes and how to whittle them down to everyday situations. While I was reading this book, there were a lot of things going on in my world, so it wasn't the easiest read I have ever had. Probably me more than the book. Good information to have for sure!
