While you do not necessarily have to read the previous set of books to really 'get' this story... I would HIGHLY recommend it! That way you know who Pamela is, why she is up north, but more importantly, WHAT has happened to the world, and what she had to do with it. That foreknowledge adds a depth and breadth to this tale that would be missing otherwise, leading to a poor conclusion that this book starts slow.It doesn't - not really, not when you know where she came from - and why. Pamela is running from her past while chasing the reality of her future, both of which leave her stumbling and lost... aimless. This new world is devastated by upheaval, destroyed and rearranged in ways both strange and dangerous. The rules have changed along with the landscape, allowing new powers to rise, old ones to fall and secrets to bleed into the soil. Pamela has to find her way in this brave new world, accompanied only by her bound powers, a dark heritage and a familiar she shouldn't be able to have. New friends are found, old faces return, and fate beckons on the wheels of an ever moving caravan.

I stopped reading the 'Rylee' type stories long ago, because her stories didn't make me feel good, but this author is a good writer, so I gave this a shot. Same old thing. Everything is evil, violent, and negative. I've read plenty of monster, scary, or post-apocalypse type stories that felt good and gave hope. Why would anyone want to spend their free time reading something so hopeless and nasty ? If I wanted to feel like this in my free time, I'd just go outside to real life.

I have read pretty much every story and short in the “Rylee” world. Pamela was never one of my favorite characters and I honestly was a bit annoyed that there was a series about Pamela coming out. But as I love all of The authors work, I figured I should give it a chance. I think this story would be a bit confusing to anyone who didn’t read any of the other stories. The first half of the book was a bit dull and I had a hard time reading it. The second half picked up more and was gold. The ending is something I am sure many fans will be excited about... but honestly I am all Team Mac. Love him and I hope he sticks around. Ms Mayer please don’t have Pam go for the obvious choice. Mac is awesome. Looking forward to the next book.

In the beginning I felt a little lost; without the beloved characters from Rylee's series it just felt lonely. But that's the point I think because that's how Pamela felt. Then enters Richard, Macey, Sage, Chris ,Mac, Frost and the other babies and its okay that Rylee and Liam are absent. Then we are gifted with "guest appearances" of a couple loved ones from Rylee's world and you're like "okay, this feels a little like home". Then you fall in love with the new characters and its even better! Then the action just gets bigger and bigger. Then heartbreak, Shannon Mayer style. (Well that kind of starts in the beginning ) But then you are happy again and she drops the ending on you.....picture Shannon Mayer walking up to you in your room, looking at you, then dropping the mike as she turns and walks away. Yeah, its like that.

I read all of Shannon Mayer's books and even though Pamela was a bit of a closed book in the Rylee Adamson series, she was still an interesting character. I'm very glad she has her own series. I would've love to read more about her previous training with Raven, but that is just me. The addition of Mac was an unexpected bonus and I enjoyed Pamela and Oka's interaction with him.The author just has a way to pull you totally into the story. The fight scenes were vividly described, the total destruction of the land and fear of those who survived seemed real and added to the suspense and desperation.Mmmm... I kind of expected a cliff hanger ending (and yes, that specific ending), to such a brilliant book and cannot wait for the next instalment!

I was trying to analyze why I liked Shannon Mayer's works so much. It's not like she's writing profound literature. The conversational, first-person style is hardly unique. But something makes me feel for the lead characters and the pages turn automatically to a point where I don't want to put them down. Unlike so many who write in this style, however, it doesn't become simplistic or childish. The plots make sense and they always seem to have a direction. I was sad at the end of the Rylee series, followed it to Elementals and now to here. After the big finish to the Elementals series, Pamela makes a better lead character than I thought possible. I began to want to see more of her, just like with Mercy Thompson in a competing series. This series is another success story for Shannon Mayer.
