I found this book too fascinating to put down. This timely work will be of interest not just to Lutherans and those who share all its perspectives. It will be of interest to readers interested in the global church, in current views about demonology, and in Reformation views and especially historic Lutheran views about demonology. --Craig S. Keener, MDiv, PhD - Asbury Theological Seminary

Excellent book !! This is a book explaining how a the Demonic world is TOTALLY real.It is practical in the nation of Madagascar. Many of the people engage the demonic world for help and are enslaved. A very foolish destructive choice with results that are horrific. This world is no where more clear and laid out than in in I AM NOT AFRAID. Every Christian and cultist should read this book. Very practical God ( of the Bible) ,satan and his demons, and the consequences of our choices are real. Reader find out who Jesus is,he is real and loves you.its never too late.

I was browsing through books published by Concordia in the Kindle Store and came across I Am Not Afraid: Demon Possession and Spiritual Warfare by Dr. Robert H. Bennett. The book takes a serious look at exorcism in the Lutheran church in Madagascar and shows how it is very similar to the examples of exorcism we find in the Scriptures. It's not sensationalistic at all but provides lots of statistics as well as lots of interviews with those who have conducted exorcisms or been demon possessed. Many of the churches in Madagascar are syncretistic and those who convert to Christianity often return to the religion of their families at which point they become demon-possessed. Christ has driven out the demons from many of these people through His Word by the people in the Lutheran church in Madagascar. Dr. Bennett, I believe, successfully argues that the Lutheran church in Madagascar has something to teach us, especially as our culture becomes more and more fascinated with occult practices and other religions. Even if we don't admit it in our words, the tendency in many churches is to act as if the Devil does not exist. The Lutherans in Madagascar know that he is very real but also know that they do not need to be afraid because Jesus is the victor. Dr. Bennett provides some very good exegetical work as well as some helpful quotes from Lutheran theologians. His work challenges many commonly held beliefs by Christians about demon possession. Dr. Bennett also maintains a blog: http://iamnotafraidblog.com/

Who knew? Lutherans are leading people of Madagascar to freedom from demons and ancestor worship! Not the best writing in the world, repetitive, but the stories are still amazing and glorious.

This fascinating book shows us that the Lutherans in Madagascar have much to teach us whose theology and practice have been influenced by modernism. The author brings to life the spiritual warfare in Madagascar through the use of personal interviews. The Lutherans in Madagascar clearly see the attacks of Satan, especially in terms of demon possession. Their use of exorcism from a Lutheran perspective has helped to keep alive this important practice in an age when western Lutherans have all but left it in the hands of the Roman Catholic Church. The second half of the book shows us that this sort of spiritual warfare is Biblical and very Lutheran. How much has the Lutheran Church in the West forfeited in caring for those who are truly demon possessed? As a Lutheran pastor, I had no training in exorcisms or discerning demon possession. This book can serve as a call to our seminaries and pastors to learn and restore the practice of exorcism from a Lutheran perspective. I think that there is more need for this than we would like to admit. Thank you Dr. Bennett for addressing this important and neglected issue.Pastor Steven Mahlburg

The best part of this book is having the interviews with individuals who have been possessed and hearing in their own words what the experience was like (the interviews are also presented in Malagasey in an appendix if you can read that language). It is nothing like the popular Hollywood depictions. In the Christian Church we often speak about the Holy Spirit but functionally ignore any of the other spirits spoken of in the Bible. This is a good read about spiritual realities presented in a case study format along with a review of what the Bible and the Church throughout history have said about demon possession and exorcism. But more than an academic presentation, this book shows individuals healed and helped through the ministry of exorcism.
