This book sparked an interest in the Vietnam War that I did not know I had. After reading it I feel a renewed appreciation for the sacrifice of all those who serve in our military.The book focuses on those who served from Stamford, CT, but it could be any town. As they note in the book, Stamford is just a microcosm of the communities across the nation that saw sons, friends, brothers, and nephews go off to Vietnam. After each vignette I found myself compelled to google the serviceman's name to find out even more about his story. The authors have a command of the history of the war, for sure, but it was their ability to capture the the humanity that left me thinking about these men for days afterward.
The book was well written. I purchased because of my neighbor who was in the Vietnam war.
Love the perspective of the story telling from various interactions throughout the war
This is a moving tribute to the people from a city in Connecticut who served (and in the case of 29 men, died) in the Vietnam War. It's not about the strategy or politics of the war, really, but rather about the experience of leaving home as an adolescent to fight in a war that is controversial at home and poorly understood even by the people in combat and command. There are also stories of families at home waiting and hoping for their loved ones to return safe. Well written.
I have read numerous other books about the Vietnam experience and this book is right at the top. It was an excellent attempt to meld the affairs of Stamford with the lives of the Vietnam Veterans. Being a Vietnam veteran myself, I felt the variety of experiences that the veterans were very well presented and the Epilogue hit a home run.
Never have you experienced/read/ or learned about Vietnam war in this way. Pick it up and be flung into the lives of these boys who became men in an unfamiliar landscape.
