As wonderful, imaginative, zany a read for adults as for teens. Many hard teenagers’ social issues are dealt with in the most creative and loving manner possible. This book casts a wide net; I doubt any teenager would feel he or she did not belong within its range. A healing book. A funny book. Fast, delicious read.

This is a must-read book. Shows the painful realities of bullying while developing a complex relationship between a younger and older sister as they both adventure into adulthood. Every girl/teen/woman will be able to relate in some way. Many novels regarding bullying are really obvious and cheesy, but Freak is a true-to-life account of a tormented girl's journey through puberty, love, heartache, a strained relationship with a mother and older sister, tormenting at school as she merely tries to be herself and her place in this world. Wonderful!

A compact story in a finely crafted emotional world. The heroine has a good amount of self-awareness and understanding, and she just happens to be at an age where it is difficult to assert herself within the constraints that adults have created for her. "Why," she asks, "would God make adults if none of them ever notice when something is going wrong?" This story would have appeal for "older adults" as well as "young adults."

My school always had snoozefest reads in their summer reading list, but I am so proud to say that this book was enjoyable. For a person who reads way above the others' reading levels in my grade, I found this totally relatable to me and our viewpoints are very alike. Come to this book with no expectations, you'll be amazed. There are snooze-worthy books about bullying and self-image but this is certainly not one of them. I'm SO going to ace the essay now!!

I really enjoyed this book and felt empathy for the main character because I was a freak growing up.

Purchased for my early-teen daughter, who loved it. Highly recommend the reading of Ms. Pixley's work. I look forward to getting her next book.

Reading Miriam's story brought long forgotten feelings back in a rush. I recommend Freak to those in middle school now and their families.

I bought this for my 16 year old stepdaughter because I heard it was a good book on teenage angst. She loved it and says it has inspired her to want to be a writer. I then read it and agree. I loved Marcella's writing style and really enjoyed the book.
