Into the company of illustrious fantasy figures, Nevins inserts essays on topics such as Doppelganger, The Gothic, Historical romance, and Sensational novel. Deft analysis of the likes of Hajji Baba, Buffalo Bill, the Phantom Child, Rima, and Sweeney Todd draws the reader into nooks and cul-de-sacs of adventure and mayhem. Surprising omissions from the vast list of entries are comments on sci-fi and the mad scientist stereotype and entries on the phantasms of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Entries are arranged alphabetically and often provide considerable detail. In his foreword, Nevins explains that the book is "subjective, not objective," and "prescriptive rather than descriptive"--claims born out by the degree of critical discussion. Contributing to the book's value to students and researchers are publication data and frequent cross-references. The text disappoints, however, in the omission of source lists. Back matter offers a limited bibliography and no index for surveying authors, titles, series, and publishers. Despite these limitations, this very readable volume is a sound addition to the reference collections on both Victorian and fantasy literature. I had fully intended to remove my 1 star rating after the title became available without the price gouging that was being inflicted upon it, but someone decided to remove it for me.This work is pretty invaluable to people wishing to research the history of Steampunk, and just plain fun to read regardless. Mr. Nevins certainly knows his subject and has done the research. Recommended for lovers of Steampunk and Science Fiction. Now if only they could release another hard/soft cover edition at some point in the future, because it really was a "fantastic" coffee table book with that great cover it used to sport.
Excellent Ebook version as regards the content, but so filled with spelling errors, grammatical flubs & butchered sentences as to be a messy read. Otherwise a pleasure- tons of authors and characters from the well known to the obscure. This edition is much expanded and improved from the version posted online for these many years.HUGE error in the section Elsie Venner- the biography given (Oliver Wendell Holmes 1841-1935) is the author's SON, O. W. Holmes Jr, who was a supreme court jurist. The author lived from 1809 to 1894 and besides his writing career was a medical doctor of significance.
Though no encyclopedia can claim to be truly exhaustive, this fantastic work by Jess Nevins is incredible in its breadth as well as in terms of incisiveness. Despite Nevins'somewhat apologetic note regarding being subjective, it is my opinion that that is the only way by which the Victorian literature can be made vivid enough to oversome the fog and gaslight. This work is magnificient in all aspects. Enjoy it.
The amazing Jess Nevins shines a light on the characters, locales and themes in the fantasy fiction of the Victorian age. Fun just to dip into for an hour or so, but invaluable if your researches touch on these issues.
Thorough and precise. I often reach for this when doing research. We are lucky to have Jess thread in dusty recesses for all the lovely near forgotten gems. He makes literary connections much clearer. I wish we'd see this reprinted.

Fatter than Elvis, smoother than Sinatra and far, far, more erudite than either one, this big honking book, nay 'tis a TOME, is staggering (heavy & detail obsessed) and stunning (one can use it to fend of muggings or to dramatically increase one's own trivia knowledge base). It needs its own zip codes and should only be approached on weekends, when one has lots of time to spare swimming in its golden amber depths. For Western Pop Culture Mavens and Dilettantes, this is the veritable source of the Nile, a thorough mapping of heroes, rogues, adventurers, she-demons, science devices and ancient civilizations.And better yet, Mr. Nevins has a Pulp volume on the 2007 horizon and a Golden Era Superhero volume to come.If you're a fan of this era, of of genre fiction, comics, scifi, fantasy, League of Extraorinary Gentlemen, you will fall for this encyclopedia like a ton of bricks.
Like the title says, this is an "Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana". So, what is in this encyclopedia? Genre fiction of the Victorian Era. What kinds of genres? Science fiction, fantasy, horror, westerns, detective stories, historical romances, gothic novels and others. Naturally, not everything written in these genres could be included, but all the important works and many of the unimportant ones are covered. Jess Nevins describes the plots of the works covered, sometimes in detail and sometimes not, and gives his opinion on the quality of the book and whether it's worth reading. In a 1,000 page book, you would expect some typos to sneak through, but there aren't that many, considering the length of the book.
