When this book was written it was prophetic for what Russia would face. In contemporary America we are facing the same issues. I was lead to the book after reading Icon and Orthodox Afterlife. Of the three this was the most profound. The author answers the question, what is the essence of Christianity? by revealing what it is. After being an Orthodox Priest for 50 years I agree with the Archbishop. This book is on the same level as The Way of the Pilgrim. Using a story it teaches the clergy their task. Few books have caused in me an emotional response. When reading this book I wept, laughed and was angered. The debate about ecumenism going on in the contemporary Orthodox Church is answered in the Archbishops response to the debate between the Orthodox missionary and the Old believer apologist. For this response, the Pharisees begin to gather. The Archbishops message is the message of Christ. " The work of Christ is the redemption and renewal of man. And if you, warrior of the Truth see the people around you are indeed renewing, perfecting, getting healthier in body, soul and spirit, .... know that you are on the side of the Truth."
Easy to comprehend. Draws the reader in. Really helpful allegory. To quote Vladyka, “Does anyone know what the words ‘save yourself’ mean? It means that, during a fire, if you do not escape it, you will burn and die...if someone claims he knows what the danger is but he, himself, does not run away from it, it means that the danger is not serious enough; isn’t that so?†The book makes you think; And has me believing Christ answers us in the consistency of His Word. As Saint Vincent of Lerins said about this consistency...the same at all times, in all places, with all the Faithful. One might need to correctly understand Orthodox ecclesiology to comprehend one small portion on the Old Believers history, but this won’t stop the reader from getting the principle of the story. My take...ecumenism...ignoring anathemas and lifting anathemas (1965)....suicide by fire.
Although written in a fictional style, the characters in this novel come alive as real persons with struggles that can only be resolved in and through Christ, but this takes perseverance, openness to change, repentance, gentleness, love, and above all humility. The Archbishop is a person who most likely really existed and who tried to change Russia's heart and soul before the soviet takeover in 1917.
Five stars! Yes, there is some translation issues, but hopefully one can move past this to the meaning of this work. This story brings the essential forward and clearly. An important fact due to the ease that the accidentals of life can quickly cloud the mind. Read this for Lent. It is hoped that this message can be remembered and applied on my part!
Kept me wanting more. Recommend highly to everyone.This is a very good book at times you want to stand and cheer
This short book is loaded with insights and twists and turns. In a search for real Christianity this book will show you the way!
I found this book to be beautifully written, with a clear message for those in doubt and despair.
I really enjoyed this book. You have to stick with it and firmly commit to reading it without distraction but if you do then you will enjoy it.
